Treatment Recommendations
Oftentimes, individuals and professionals working with them want to know what forms of psychiatric and mental health treatment would be most beneficial for alleviating mental health conditions and promoting the individuals best level of adjustment, functioning, and quality of life.
Differential Diagnosis
There is frequently overlap between the symptoms and features of one psychiatric condition and other conditions, making them difficult to tell apart. Questions of differential diagnosis are among the most frequent questions we are asked to address. Differential diagnosis involves a process of determining what condition or disorder is best supported by available data and information. In other words, it is a process of ruling in a disorder or condition while ruling out others.
Intellectual and Other Developmental Disabilities
The presence of Intellectual Disability (formerly known as “mental retardation”) may be relevant for many reasons, including an individual’s daily functioning (adaptive skills), his or her capacity to benefit from educational and vocational services, and to address issues of support and placement.
Correctional Mental Health Treatment
It is not unusual for us to provide consultation on correctional systems of treatment or to consult on the treatment of individual patients in correctional systems. Recently, for example, Dr. Thompson recently consulted with a state correctional system on the management of individuals who demonstrate persistent patterns of non-suicidal self-injury—a vexing problem for correctional systems and professionals working within them.
